Am I working this out right? (Handrail related)

I'm making up a set of hand rails for an external set of stairs attached to a house,

I'm making them 1050 high from top of step

The Op has sent me this link on Pinterest which is what she wants replicating

Do I need 10 horizontal bars at 20mm to keep it to the 100mm gap?

Or can I get away with less?

My brains hurting at the minute and this which is a simple calculation seems to be baffling me and Doris isnt much help with this kind of thing.

If the bars are 20mm thick you should be ok with 9 of them

Depends how steep the steps are the steeper they are the less bars youll need

You may find it’s meant to be 1100 from the front edge of the stair for a handrail preventing a fall.
I can’t remember now.

I always find drawing the stairs out and then figuring out the best configuration for the rails is best.

Measure from the top and bottom post horizontaly not diagonally.
I normally clamp something to the bottom post for this. I deal with timber but the calcs will be the same.

Hi, If I can muddy the waters a bit more, Apart from the 100mm rule to stop the short people putting their head through. Isn't there a regulation about horizontal bars and their ability to climb up and possibly go over the top?

I thought it was a 90mm hole not 100.

Heights are 900 above the nose / pitch line on stairs,1000 on internal landing,1100 external landing.

Height of between 900 and 1000mm from the pitch line of the stair, 1100mm at landings and floor level. 100mm sphere must not pass through where kids likely to be present. Ditto not 'readily climable'.

Design load 0.35kN/m for domestic internal, 0.74kN/m domestic for falls.

Email a typical detail to your area Building Control Officer for comment if you're not sure. They are there to help.

900 mm minimum from the pitch line, basically verticlly from the nose of the steps.
1100 would be far too high on a stair, that's for fall protection on landings etc.

Even 1000 feels high on stairs.
