Aluminized Welding Gloves

You've seen them right? They got what looks like aluminum foil on the backhand? How effective are they at reflecting heat? The reason why I ask is because last night when I had the machine set to 3/16" steel plate for the MIG process, my left hand was getting too hot towards the end of the weld. The heat was getting me at the base of my left index finger. I've tried the gloves with the backhand pad that snaps into the glove, but I've never tried the kind with the built in aluminum.

Have you guys tried them? Your thoughts?

I used too work in a aluminium foundry and we used similar there, they were very good at protecting from heat, but the tools used for it were built around the fact they were quite cumbersome to use, never had too try welding with them tho

I have had some - they work - but they don't last long.

Welding gloves in general don't last me very long thou.

Normally I just go for the standard Weldas type/make gloves

make yourself a metal knuckle guard ,,, like a middle bit off a gauntlet and use it as a slide ,,,, just a bit of flat plate bent into a squashed circle should work . adjust to suit.

You get good ones and bad ones.

I had some old esab ones (i'm talking 20 years old, new old stock) absolute quality, lasted years.

The new ones, even esab, crap.

A lot of good welding gloves were made in pakistan, and they could provide a quality item.
Then china came along, and china doesn't give a crap about quality, it's all about price.

I hope pakistan's textile industry is doing okay. Maybe one day the greed of corporations will change and we will get back to quality gear.

I have had some - they work - but they don't last long.

That's been my experience too, I bought a set of paraweld ones and they lasted me about 8 hrs (all running butt joints vertical up on 5mm plate, so not exactly harsh process settings), but for those 8hrs they were substantially cooler than my normal gloves.

I prefer to use one of the little hand-protector thingies, effectively a rectangle of chrome leather with elastic straps on the back and a layer of aluminised fibreglass stitched to the outside, they seem to last much better.

years ago I was getting into this welding game and making sculptures using mig weld as a surface texture. Worked a treat.
This sort of thing

But very hot on the left hand.
I know, wet the glove and evaporation will keep it cool.

water absorbs load of heat. Thats why they use it radiators.
Cue one parboiled hand.
Plan A was the ape from 2001 waving his bone in the air.
Like hell was that happening
I have noticed that lots of self taught metal sculptors try this game and stop.
A few keep on doing it.
I have seen a frog about 900mm long made like this.
Stuff that.
Note
my little Clarke 130 welder survived this sort of behaviour for six years.
Duty Cycle? whats that.
