Ah now that makes sense..I have alloy off cuts, I produce a fair amount.
Ally is much dearer by weight but seems to be cheaper by volume
I thought Aluminium was about 3 times the price of steel..If they're the same size "slugs" - then the steel will weigh about 3 times the weight of the aluminium.
Depending on the specific alloy of the steel, that is.
The steel is probably about 3kg and the Aluminium about 1kg.
Aluminium would have to cost 3 times as much as steel to make the prices per "slug" anywhere near equal.
All the Best,
CJ
PS - I took steel density as 7.75-8.05g/cm3 - so went in the middle with 7.9g/cm3
And I took aluminium to be 2.7g/cm3

I know 3 years ago when I priced up an Aluminium bed for my recovery truck it was way cheaper for materials in Steel. Lol
I think aluminium is one of the top 3 most abundant elements on the planet so it should be cheap really.
Especially as it's currently smelting itself out of the ground in Australia.
It does vary but for something like a recovery bed you could use 3mm steel checkered plate where as you might want 5mm if it was alloy which then works out more expensive.
