I will be needing to buy some more ao and plan on using a fair bit in the future. The only place I have bought blasting media is from the local machinemarts but I gather its not the cheapest place to source. Where is everyone getting theirs from? I'm not needing industrial amounts but hopefully a quantity per month which makes machinemart too pricey.

I get the big tubs from Machine Mart for about £35. if you buy regularly and speak to the store manager you can normally cut a deal, I saved a tenner a refill by doing that.

i collected 200kg of glass grit for that price!!(£40), if you up north its even cheaper. The depot i collected it from was near ringwood (new forest), i think the main refinery is in stockport its easy to find by search online.

Hi im interested in details Please im in Whitchurch Shrops [ Near Chester ] as i need to replace mine soon i run J blast but am wondering about changing to glass grit .
Does glass grit give off more or less dust than JBlast does anybody know and what are the wear rates on Hoses and Nozzles like J Blast doesnt seem to wear stuff out fast like AL Oxide does ???

Turns out the main refinery was stockton on tees !! this is where the iso quality stuff is made http://www.wardrecyclingltd.co.uk/contact.aspx

but this one is closer to you, very cheap, might be worth a bit of further research. There could be one even closer, i contacted local sandblasters and building restorers who use it, a few weren't interested but others where happy to help me source it. Its also used in swimming pool filter systems so i looked into that but most mark up the sand 3 or 4 times.

I've only ever used the glass, so can't offer any extra advice but heres some sale gumpf form one of the links ---

Im gona look into glass Grit a bit more it might be a lot cleaner to work with also Than my normal stuff which i think is copper slag if the dust is less that would be a big Bonus for Visability and the Neighbours LOL although my newly made cyclone is sorting the dust out well now.
Might empty the cabinet and try a bag.

if your using copper slag in a cabinet u can generaly only use it twice and it turns to soot then u bin it .its an expendable abrasive

Ok, looks like I'll have to phone round all the local suspects and see who actually supplies AO bar machinemart. I am in chester so Wrexham, Buckley and deeside are also close enough. I think mail order would be too much as I don't need pallet load to make shipping costs acceptable.

Yes, I use crushed glass for cleaning up ally or cleaning up flash rust on steel. Never found it any good for removing coatings tho. I used to use it to blend casting in when doing porting work then use flap wheel to achieve the desired finish.

Got 1 ton of glass grit from Stacey's yesterday, worked out at 10p/kilo delivered.

I got the "fine" grade and it works perfectly with my 2.5 mm nozzle (only slightly worn) and my suction gun.

I also got a bag of "fine-medium" to try. This looks about the same size as the stuff I produce myself, which needs a larger nozzle and clogs the suction gun up.

I think I'll rename the thread who can get the cheapest crushed glass delivered per tonne

do need some fresh crushed glass, just not a tonne. If i had the storage space that would be another story But i think I'll be making some space outside at that price, great for cleaning up cast ally to which i'll be giving a clear coat. Still havent got around to getting some fresh ao, whats the bulk prices on that delivered instead of messing round getting lil bags may as well get a decent stock as the blasting seems like it'll be getting used more than anticipated being i cant find a suitable chemical stripper for my circumstances.

The sample bag I got was sealed, not like the usual vented bag so you could keep them outside under a tarp. It's slightly more expensive, but not much

what's the correct way to dispose of aluminium oxide? I assume the used crushed glass can go straight back for recycle?

I was just wanting something clearing up...........

i was just searching for a decent amount of ao and found a site that was selling different media. Now i have only used ao and glass beads before. I found the glass beads to be next to useless for coating removal but great for blending and cleaning up cast ally. I didn't realise that glass grit and glass beads were a different thing?! The site said the beads were used for what I found it to be really good at, but glass grit can be used for coating removal (being it's angular like ao), is this correct as if so I will forget the ao and use glass grit as at them prices would provide me with a cheap media even if it expendable and not recycled like ao and glass beads. What's it's ability like for coating removal and what grade would give me a similar profile to ao which is what is required for coating?
