Aluminium Mig Welding

I have a very small amount of welding to do on a aluminium Land Rover bonnet.

Now at the moment my welder isnt set up for it ie, Co2 gas, metal wire liner.

I dont want to have to go out and spend £30 getting new gas and liner, but would the welds turn out that bad using the set up i already have and just changing the wire.

With co2 it will be a black horrible mess. It's a Land Rover though so it won't really matter Get the drill out and pop rivet it if you don't want to spend.

You will need pure argon gas, no exceptions (other than expensive He/Ar mix.)

You can do without a liner change.

chemical metal glue is a low cost approach depending what the repair is what landy is it?

Never thought of a metal glue, may be the way forward for me.

The bit i need to repair is the corner of the bonnet on a series 3.

Hi, I'm curious about this lumiweld (landrover owner!).

What comes with the kit? Is it just brazing rods for aluminium and how difficult is it?

John it looks like just the rods are in the kit. You will just need a small stainless steel wire brush and a small torch. The welding is actually soldering as you don't melt the base metal. I use a similar product for some small pot metal castings and its fine for that. As far as your hood (bonnet) if its a crack it prob won't work well it prob will re crack pretty quick. If its an area where there is metal over metal like 2 layers it prob will work better as you are just connecting the 2 layers together as one...Bob

If its a hidden area i would rivet and maybe epoxy under the part to keep it from wiggling around...Bob
