Alternative trailer socket mounting strip instead of seel plate

I'm sick of connecting the trailer or caravan and finding I bend the thin steel plate holding the 13 pin light socket when I push the trailer /caravan the fly lead in .

I've also got the impression that sometimes it is bent as I turn sharp corners from being pushed by the towing hitch .

Have any of you ever modified the mounting so it is made of rubberized cotton reinforced conveyor belting ?
If so have you got any tips or suggestions ?

Do any of you have any such belting lying around about that you might be prepared to part with ?
I'm thinking I'll need a strip max size 300 x 200 mm by around 8 mm or slightly more thick .. reimbursement will be some beer tokens

Such things already exist, in plastic. It is such a pain in the backside that I have bought the steel bracket and a pair of new alloy sockets to do an upgrade.

Do you mean you won't be using the kit with the plastic strip and have reverted to using a steel strip ?

What I mean is that I have a plastic mounting bracket with 12N and 12S on now. I am going to do away with that and install a proper steel one, with new (alloy) sockets. I have everything but the cable entry grommets, so still can't do the job!

mount the sockets just behind the bumper facing down that way nothing catches them even when turning full lock and will be just about out of view when not in use

Whilst you at it change socket and plugs to 13pin. Whilst they are more expensive the difference is amazing and far better. Once you have used 13 pin you won't go back to 7 pin !

Best place to mount in a series LR is in the rear PTO hole in the bumper

The nato fit nicely over that hole and is almost flush with either a screw lid or spring flap (later type)

enlighten me please-are the benefits of more pins,mean you have 2 pins giving contact where previously there were only 1[eg 2 pins per circuit].& are the 13 pin sockets just better quality & more reliable?

Build quality is much better. The 13pin combines the two 7 pin sockets into one. The pins are also much higher current rated. The plug also cams in as you turn the outside so positive lock of contacts.

Not all pins are used. You only use 12

Even if you use all 7 x 2 you only need one earth.

Not quite right. Earths are doubled up for current reasons. The 'fridge' feed is seperated after 1999 with its own earth.

The 13 pin socket is not quite as wonderful as some people assume. If you look on the caravan forums, you will see the troubles that some are having. Personally, I prefer the 12N and 12S.
