Alloy painting.

I have two 2.8x1.5 metre alloys gates to paint. Manu'd from 50x50 al/al hollow section. Outer skin clad with 1.6 mm sheet, pop riveted to hollow section.

What is the best way to approach painting al/al, I know cleanliness is important, will give a good clean with brake cleaner. Should I linish sheet for a key and, what etching primer would one recommend?

Gates are for my use and, will of course be subject to the elements.

any 2 pack etch primer roughing it up a bit helps as well even a rough scotchpad then paint them with manor coatings high build vinyl

Thanks for this, mate. Roughing would be a pain, big area, x two, will do it if this helps wit ha better bond? Mate gave me this stuff, see images, no instructions how to mix one with other. I'll try google.

You could roughen that surface in a couple of minutes with a 6" DA.

If it's new ali, then a scotchbrite pad or 180g it, I'd use an epoxy like Jotun Penguard on ebay £50-60 - 5 litres, I'd spray it, then 2pk gloss it, same prep as a car

BTW have you had a cost on powdercoating, that would be my first option £12-15 m2 around by me that's £60 each...........

I received a quote from local powder coat company, IMO, a decent and fair price, job will now be left to the experts.
