Hi All,
I haven't been on in a while, but I thought I should ask advice from you guys, sorry if this should be in the Tig section, I am certain a mod will move it if necessary.
I had a customer come in today with a couple of car bits, a Nissan Skyline inlet manifold needing a flange welded on, and a fuel tank to be welded up from scratch. He told me on the phone that if was all pretty much fabbed up and ready to be Tigged. It's not.
He has spot-migged the inlet manifold to keep the relevant bits (a pipe and a flange) in the right place, which is fine 'cos I hate trying to eyeball stuff like that when the car isnae here to work on myself. But there's a fair amount of prep needed to get rid of some 3mm gaps before I can get started welding.
The tank is 1000 x 500 x 200mm, with the usual pipes, baffles and gubbins needing welded. BUT its like a flat pack from Ikea. I assumed it was going to be the usual folded idea, unfortunately not. It's all rectangles cut from flat sheet. 3mm flat sheet as well, it's going to weigh a bloody ton when it's full of fuel!
But it all only fits where it touches. I reckon I'm gonna spend a full afternoon getting it ready to weld, if anyone has ever tried tae build an air / watertight box from scratch, you'll know what i'm on about. He seems like a really nice bloke, but I'm swamped with work just now and I just cannae justify all the prep time, and then charge him accordingly. Should I drop it back off to him and see if he can do the work? I want to help him out, but I'm not working for nothing, which is what I would be doing if I had to do all the prep needed myself?
Any advice would be great. Cheers
