Mate’s tractor as above has a magneto that has lost magnetism. Anyone had experience of remagnetising or know someone who can advise?

We are wrong end of country really
Friend has the machine, said he will do it if there is now one else as he will have to dig the beast out.
He is a bit unreliable due to health problems in and out of hospital
I think there are one or two on here who have a machine

The mate in question sometimes travels down to Devon via Cambridge to see family, so it might work, otherwise a courier job.

It’s a Lucas type, apparently.

That could work we are off M5 so on way, could not promise completion date though as above.
Would be an interesting experience as I have never seen it work.
He owned a A.C.B model
It involves a lot of metal 2 coils and a big 12 volt battery.
It has not seen work for a No decades

Wow, I was thinking of making one for him with some magnet wire and two bars, but that looks a lot more substantial.

yes i have a very old very big magnetiser
lucas sr4 is easy but you must turn the armature and lock it when the largest gap between the magnets is uppermost it only takes seconds

now are you sure the coil is not a dud check ohms between lt and ht connections should be around 4k ohm its the ht to lt soldered connection that deteriorates ! unfortunately its buried in the windings
the old codgers believe that a couple of hours in the oven " fixes all" its an oven ffs not a time machine !

grief bad hot starts / no starts
the lt coil can be re used if carefully exposed and if the coating can stand the ba

king process at most you lose 1 turn the bad bit that goes back out " can be tricky but somet

imes its ok and makes no difference to the spark . if you cant get a local to look at it send it over the border

I used to do lots of electrical fixing for him, but have since moved away. We never got around to looking at the Allis, but it would be nice to see that going one day.

there was a massive selenium plate rectifier that was replaced by four diodes and the knife switch is bypassed and there was a lightbulb
ithink warning light or possibly to obviate spikes when disconnected

i never ever touch it when on as it has miles of 100 year old cotton
coated wire and dont fancy a 240 dc belt
if ihammer the magnet when live i use a bronze hammer with wooden shaft

Had a DC belt as an apprentice burnt a divot in a finger lucky to get away with it, long story.
Bridgewater had both AC & DC in the Dock aeria.
I remember that cotton covered wire it was wrapped round the conductors old enough to remember lead sheathed household cables and VIR
Interesting that yours is made 10 miles from me, Malcomes still has a knife SW but no maker's name.
Wonder if a different model it does not have the raised portion either.
