Aldi 'metal paint' - quite 'watery/thin'

Having seen numerous recommendations on this site concerning the Aldi black metal paint i went ahead and purchased a couple of tins a few weeks ago. Last weekend i wire brushed some garden gates, applied red oxide primer and then applied the Aldi paint but i couldnt help but notice how 'thin' and watery it was, it does recommend 2 coats but to be honest 3 would be better. Is this normal - thanks in advance Mark (ps plenty of time was allowed for the red oxide to dry out)

I use it a lot and just clean what I am going to paint and give it two coats, the first is the prime coat and the second goes on as soon as touch dry. I have not noticed it being thin and watery, has it been stirred after standing ?

yes its watery /thin compared to some ...stick with it , its better than you would expect

it needs to go onto keyed metal or clean rust. It sous not seem to like shiny metal or other surfaces and therefore looks quite thin. As a test get a piece of rusty steel. brush off the surface rust on one half and really clean the other so its shiny. the paint over it. you will notice it goes on thick over the rusted part and looks thin on the shiny part.

Yep that's about right.

Have used it for 3 years now and really rate it, the outside items I have painted are as good as the day I did them.

I brush it on quite quickly, not worrying if each coat is covering totally, 3 coats like that seems to do the job.

I like the Lidl Baufix paint. It's quite thick and smooths out if you apply a heavy coat. I normally apply a quick brushing of it, wait a minute and then go back and apply a heavy coat. Let it drip!!!! I only use it for bits that won't be seen anyway so doesn't matter but it smooths out, Just done my rear bumper suppots for my saab c900.

It does seem a bit thin, and if you don't stir it, it's like varnish.

You definitely need three coats in my opinion.

That said, it's good stuff and good value for money.

I put 2 coats onto a metal gate at the stables, due to location it has a lot of driven rain, after 3 years it's still good.

I've used this a few times, found it takes a while to dry but flows nicely. Wonder if it would spray ok?.

metal workshop doors are (over) due for a repaint and was gonna spray then with black aldi metal paint.

Mate of mine sprayed his Guzzi with black Aldi paint and gunwash thinners using a cheap touch up gun and it came out really nice with a good shine to it which surprised me.

I'll be keeping an eye out. I've got through two tins of the stuff and it's been brilliant.

As noted first coat goes on quite thin and shows through in places, tends to dry with a matt finish, but then a thicker second coat comes up an absolute treat. Next time there is some in stock I'll probably buy all the black ones

A tip, if your local store is anything like ours, they put the "specialbuys" out late the night before and you can buy them then.

the gannets tend to get in early and there is alot of green and white paint left. the Black and silver usually disappear quite fast.

As to the OP, it's designed to go directly on to metal not on to a primer
