So, this happened to what I originally thought was a coil but later discovered to be a relay, in my Scheppach / Ferrex belt sander (it involved a drill bit and a relatively high level of incompetence on my part...)
Result = magic smoke escaped.
This is the wiring diagram:
I can buy a replacement but I have a standard 8 pin relay and holder so figured "how hard can it be?" but I don't seem to be able to get it to work.
I put the switched live and neutral to pins 2 & 7 on the relay, which should be the coil, looped #2 to pin 8 to introduce live to one of the commons, and then attached "White" (at the starting cap) to pin 6, which is the normally open contact for common on #8:
Should that have worked? If so then I guess I've damaged one of the caps
