Yes, it was. He also suffered severe frost bite if I remember correctly. Quite a perturbing incident, we all imagine aviation to have the ultimate in maintenance and safety standards but this event and many others show it is very prone to quite worrying human error.

Lets face it , the british industry never sat down and designed a pure racing or sports machine, anything sporty was a commuter machine converted, thunderbird - became bonneville, b31 33 became goldstar, bsa golden flash became rocket goldstar etc etc, and so were on the limits of their endurance. still love them though.
