Yes, it was. He also suffered severe frost bite if I remember correctly. Quite a perturbing incident, we all imagine aviation to have the ultimate in maintenance and safety standards but this event and many others show it is very prone to quite worrying human error.

yup and his mate hanging on to him and didnt let go . a store man gave the fitter the wrong screws with a diffrent part number on them but they looked identical. aparently they were slightly smaller and the screen blew out

Can't say I have seen a riveted Goldie crank?
I have a riveted Sunbeam crank, until something like 1929 they riveted the pinions in, it has several rows of rivets.

The main shafts are pressed into the flywheels and riveted through a flange into the flywheels also. On the very few i have seen anyway. Wasn't it a weak point when the shafts press fit became loose and the rivets wore their holes oval ?

You got me there, I should remember them, I had quite a few Bs and I used to do a lot of odds and ends for Len [Haggis]. But I don't remember the riveted pinions.
My sunbeam crank has them, as you say the pinion has a flange and
it has lot's of rivets around it; every time I look at it I wonder if I am
going to be making a pair of wheels and pinions; I suppose I could
stroke it;-)

A related job I've seen go through here recently needed several new sets of wheels. These are damn big split rims but realistically not anything fancy. They had to go back to the original manufacturer and get them to dig the tooling out and effectively set the production line up from scratch to make some new ones. I asked why on earth they were bothering when I know a mate of mine in the professional rally-car world could have pointed them at a manufacturer who would ask for diameter, width, offset, PCD and bead form and had a set of wheels on the doorstep the following day for half the price.
Turns out that if they are from the same manufacturer then the original certification holds. Doesn't matter that none of the original people are still working there so even the original manufacturer was learning how to do it as they went along.
If they had changed supplier then the trailers would have to have been sent off to be dragged around Salisbury plains for six months behind a tank (at our cost) before the MOD would accept them as fit for purpose.

I guess this is why the "military" grade stuff costs so much? It cant be cheap to pay for a tank to drive round Salisbury for 6 months (although i have often wondered what they were doing all night!)
Yep - we're an independant profit making company so if we have to pay for the MOD to certify something then that cost gets added to the final price (no doubt plus a percentage). You would think they would work things like that out and just pay for it themselves.
All this was to combat abuse of the system where we were the sole supplier and would do work on a "cost plus" basis. Basically we would do a job and would be paid whatever it cost plus a percentage (5% seems to ring bell). Problem was that meant as long as we could show something as a cost on paper then we got that money plus the percentage back so it paid the company to have a huge overtime bill and to use the most expensive parts.
I'm actually a scummy contractor and work for a large American company but I've been here for 15 years so have a bit of an odd perspective as both an outsider and an insider with the customer. It's interesting to see how their practices have changed over the years that I've been here as we've been exposed to competition and had to price for jobs up-front with little wiggle room if we have a problem partway through.
We don't just do work for the UK MOD and they are by no means the daftest when it comes to wasting telephone number style amounts of money.

Actually, loads of British bike cranks aren't that clever. Material, quality, design etc, all issues with all Brit manufacturers. Even the crank in my Vincent Rapide is delicate if abused or revved hard too often. The main shafts and big end are all known to move in the flywheels in those circumstances. Why they didn't just forge each wheel with the shaft to minimise the problems is a mystery. It took the Japs to make indestructible cranks and engines in general. Sad but true.

They did the same with a lot of British ideas, making it cheaper and better, now we have the Chinese trying the same but have only managed the cheaper bit

Wow , i was going to buy a vincent 500 single years ago, i had the money , don't know why i didn't
, i'm sorry now as it would have steadily grown in value. Lets face it , the british industry never sat down and designed a pure racing or sports machine, anything sporty was a commuter machine converted, thunderbird - became bonneville, b31 33 became goldstar, bsa golden flash became rocket goldstar etc etc, and so were on the limits of their endurance. still love them though.
