I want to start using Ferromaxx7 but ap want to charge £48 plus vat for the regulator that you need for their bottle.

Is this my local agent taking the pi$$ or is this the norm?

Ap is a 22 mile round trip or I've got BOC half a mile away.

Ferromaxx7 is 300 bar, £56.12 a fill. Plus £56.40 for the pi$$ing reg.
Argoshield Universal is 230 bar, around £43 a fill.

Is the extra 70 bar worth it ??????

If you do a lot, yes. Your bottle will last about third longer. For industrial users, this makes a difference..
For diy users, probably neither here nor there.

The ferromax is a nicer gas imo, noticably different on clean/blasted metal, especially with the non coated wires.

As for fill, both are almost the same amount v cost.

Do either AP or BOC charge you to collect the bottle?




The ferromax regs are supposed to be hand tight. But that doesnt work, they always seem to need another nip up with a pair of pliers.

Collection charge is about the same,£13.

Ap is about a fivers worth of derv and 90 mins out of my day.

I'm making gates and railings and I'm pretty busy so maybe a w size/Large bottle every 6 weeks.

I'm mostly welding 8-10mm so would Ferromaxx 7 be better or go for Ferromaxx 15?

We use f15 for everything.

To be honest, i cant see that its worth you changing?
The downtime saved changing the cylinders is lost in the traveling/fuel to the AP agent.

Two things ask for the regulator for free I got mine free by changing over on both bottles, they are supposed to be changing all bottles to 300 bar eventually they are alot safer to move around not so top heavy.
Get a quote from BOC for your gas if need be lie how much you use then go back to AP and let them know how much you can get it from BOC.
I pay £13.97 for Ferromaxx 7 and £49.56 for pure argon I was paying almost double that before BOC cold called offering to quote me for gas all plus v.a.t. Well worth a try.Last time I got them delivered it cost £33.95 for two bottles.

That is what I am getting at I had been on what they call a new account charge for years before someone else mentioned what they were paying,the bottle is a X30S Integra it is about 2/3 the size of the tall bottle but filled to 300bar.
Give BOC a call for a price lie what you use if need be get them to email or fax a quote then you have it in black and white and get back to A.P. office 08457 020202 (not the guy that supplies it from the yard they don,t give a hoot what you pay). A.P. do not want to lose customers, after getting my rate reduced I told the girl that I prefer to be kissed when I get shafted it went right over her head, by the way check the next invoice that comes in because it took a few exchanges before it went through but I did get refunded.

I'll have to remember that one! Try it on with em Baz... BOC used to be like the Nazi SS! when they had a virtual monopoly...thing's have changed though. The gas majors still run something of a cartel but are willing to deal nowadays (they make their margins on "fixed charges" & rental anyway ).

I opened an account with Boc today for a W size Argoshield Universal, I'll wait until I've exchanged a couple of bottles and then hit them for a price reduction.

I bought a Portamig 215 from Steve and up until now I've used Co2 with it and was pleased with the results but now its on Argo Uni it is stunning, so smooth its unbeliveable.

I've been using a Kempi kempoweld 400 alot lately runing Ferromaxx7 and I think its as smooth a machine as that is. The owner of the Kempi struggles to tell the difference when both are around the 200 amp range. I look forward to upgrading when funds permit so I can do some heavy work for the other bloke.

Is 9.20m3 the big bottle ?

I'll try to get a reduction on the cost of the reg.

I had a look at an invoice and it only states the weight 15.6 kg if you are talking about the regulator in the photo tell them you will take the integra bottles if they give you a reg. FREE they want everyone to change over to the integra bottles or get in touch with the head office and let them know that you have standard regulators but are willing to change over but you are not willing to buy new regulators for your bottles.I got mine free for tig and mig.

The AP Integra cylinders are just a ball-ache in my opinion! The gas is no different to anybody elses, but the fittings are totally different. So, it may save you a few quid on not having to buy a regulator, but you are then tied in to buy their fittings (at suitably inflated prices!)
