After a wifi range extender

Cheap and cheerful will do as only need it until house refurb finished.
Range of about 30 yards would be ideal, its to go from house to house, so signal will have to travel through at least two walls.
Any recommendations would be great.

External point to point is what you want, a little more pricey but designed to do what you want.

I have my last free modem wifi thingie setup as a switch and ave it sitting on an upstairs
window ledge, it gives me wired networked printers and a wifi signal to a garage a ~hundred yards away.

Walls are an issue, Wi-Fi doesn't like walls.

I'd say cable would be best bet.

We use TP-Link Mesh and they really are a great bit of kit (Deco 4 iirc?).

Maybe one of those in the loft of each house would do the job?.

I get good wifi signal 30 meters down the garden.

Look into ubiquity. They do all kinds of tranmitter/receivers you can get that stuff cheap on the second hand market that's been ripped out of office buildings.
I've ran external cat5 overhead with no issues (like bt do with phone lines two rawl bolts pigtails either end) but you'll have a overhead washing line between buildings. Quicker than digging a trench.
