Aerial Chainsaw

I want to get myself an aerial chainsaw, what I think they call a "top handle" one? This for cutting whilst up a tree / off a ladder.

Makita 36V, brushless is a given as I already have the battery platform.

I'm not going to mess about buying a cheaper make and using Makita batteries with an adapter, like I did with my main chainsaw.

I helped clean up after a fatality where by a man had cut his femoral artery whilst working from a ladder with a little chainsaw.He fell and his leg became entrapped in the ladder and broke. His wife looked on as his life ended miserably and most painfully.

We were hired to remove the entire tree and the back garden was a bloody stinky mess.

I got several chainsaws - but I only got one top handled saw a Echo CS-2511TES.

I really don't like top handled saws - I also don't like "climbing" with saws.

Buying a Silky saw the best thing that has happened to me for tree maintenance around my workshop yard (plus at home and other property we got).

A ladder is no place for somone inexperienced to be doing one handed cuts, even using a chainsaw at all on a ladder is risky - to which I'd suggest tying the ladder securely to the tree, wearing a harness, even if its a just a rope or sling around the waist..
Tieing the top of ladder will prevent it dropping away if some thing hits.

I had to be rescued recently! My foot was in a narrow union and got stuck, but my other foot was too low to low me to lift my right leg to free it. I needed somone to bring a ladder for me to stand higher and them to help me lift my leg out.

The Echo 2511 is a great saw, highly recommend one. The best option for climbing in my opinion, and quite enough that I rarely bother with ear defenders.

I suggest you dont need a top handle, use the saw you already have on a lanyard around the handle.

Couldnt recommend a cordless top handle, theres no advantage. For small stuff, like you find on a fruit trees, cordless Fakita 40mm secatuers are excellent.

Or a Fiskars UPX86 pole pruner, it is very good! 4M reach. We often use it in the tree or up a ladder.

You could use your Einhell, it will do everything a top handle can, stick a short 8 or 10" narrow nosed carving bar to make it easier to use.

Cordless are heavier than a similar petrol saw, twice so for the 36v versions. 18v is adequate - my Katsu cordless top handle is reasonably capable, was £60, but heavier than the Echo.

For branches over 40mm but under 150mm, the brushless pruning chainsaws are quite good, perhaps as capable as the Katsu. Much lighter than a full size cordless or petrol. No chain brake but they have short bars and less power. Relatively safe but keep your second hand out of the way!

Type C trousers are worth having, along with toe cap boots. Woudlnt nessasarily say that proper chainsaw boots have any more protection, if you hit foot it will be the toe area, so toe cap should do the job.

For the cost of a genuine Makita I could do the work for you.

£600/day, you'd get the most experienced climber I know, me and a groundie, everying can be taken away and chipped. Thats a friends only rate, most jobs he quotes a lot more.
