Hi, I'm in leeds, starting a project on a old mini, looking to learn to weld, thinking of buying the Clarke 135te, I wonder if anyone can give me some tips on where to find scrap for free to practice on, even better a old car door or something. I don't mind buying from a scrap yard but I wondered if I could do it on the cheap. Thanks.

Look for fabricators or steel stockholders in your area and go down and speak to them, tell them what you're up to and give them a few quid for some bits from their scrap bin. Ive had loads from a local supplier, costs me a few quid and i get pretty much any scrap bits i want they even cut bits up for me.

Keep your eyes open - people leave scrap at their gates. The scrappers arent round as much because the price is down.
Washing machine outer shell is nice thin metal to practice on - you need to clean off the galv first tho.

Anything with galv I suggest you avoid. It's horrible stuff (and potentially harmful to breath in the fumes) which you need to grind well into to remove. Rust isn't as bad! Try any fabricator type places and offer cash, as long as you explain what you want and that you aren't a gyppo you will probably have success.

look for metal beds round or square frames people throw loads of the stuff out as they are crap so replace often with new ones the metal is very thin though
i would also prefer the 150 te to the 135 or even the gas no gas option of the 150 clarke model just gives you a little more power but comes in handy sometimes
im in leeds soon at ls10 got to get new roof sheets from that area, as person unable to deliver 12ft of roof sheets
if your near i might be able to dig in my scrap pile and give you some of it to aid you out if you want it will be mixed from 3mm right down to 0.5 or 0.7 metal and i think i have some throw a way pieces of 5mm

It's good to have thicker stuff than body panels to begin with, but bear in mind this is a 135a machine so 3-4mm is probably its limit.
