Advice on Welding Courses

I work as a mantance engineer in a food process enviroment and have been asked if myself and a college would be intersted in learning to pipe weld. I can stick two bits of pipe together and know a bit about it ie perging etc. It would be all stainless steel TIG welding, and i am keen to follow up the offer but: i have a couple of questions you may be able to help me with?

1. Can anyone tell me what qualifications you need to weld food grade pipping?

2. Can anyone recommend a course/courses to get me to the correct standard?

They wIll be looking for ASME IX or EN 287 for food grade pipe, not familiar with your local area but would have doing a "Google" search may be a good place to start

If your only doing OD pipe for product, not under pressure etc which I assume your are doing you require no codes or qualifications, only systems under pressure require codes, to find out what codes you would need you could speak to some one like Zurich very unlikely they would want Asme

Just out of curiosity why would someone not ask for ASME?

It's an American standard far more complicated than the en standards, and as he's not working in America it is very unlikely they will require it, for insurance purpose you don't need to be coded to weld OD pipes containing food, where you would to weld nominal bore tube under pressure, you can get codings in OD but there no point

ASME is widely used throughout Europe, not just in the States

If the customer requires the welding to be done to a required standard (ASME, EN, BS etc) they will want to see documented evidence of the welders ability, it's got absolutely nowt to do with insurance, it is down to the customers specifications

Well if you read he's a maintenance engineer so he well be working on systems they have in place not working to customer specs, so they would want to do it as cheaply as easily possible

So a maintenance weld does not need to be of the same quality as a production weld then, seems strange but I probably have got it wrong.

Sorry where's quality Come from codes have nothing to do with quality as you could be taught to pass the test,you just need to learn to purge OD pipe and then probs learn to weld NB to a 6g coded level and it is for insurance purposes to prevent people getting hurt

Sorry fella don't understand what you are getting at, and with reference to OD and NB pipe, are you talking about outside diameter and nominal bore?

if so, what has the way a pipe size is measured got to do with whether you weld it to a recognised welding standard or not, a weld test can be carried out on any size pipe or plate, it all depends upon the production welds the test piece is meant to be representing

When talking about OD pipe it's thin wall pipe used for carrying food and water, and nominal bore is used for steam nothing to do with measuring the pipe, so I'm saying he won't need codeings fr the OD thin wall tube as its not under pressure, but he will fr the NB, as its can be fatal if done in correctly,

If it's carrying foodstuffs the quality requirements are unbelievably stringent, the penetration bead has to be absolutely spot on, the smallest fault is cause for rejection, this is why a lot of companies are now insisting on orbital welds on foodstuff pipes.

Was witnessing some weld tests a couple of weeks back on 0.25mm wall thickness tube, as previously stated the wall thickness and what pressure, if any, the pipe is going to be subject to has absolutley nowt to do with whether the welders need to be coded or not, it is totally down to the manufacturers specifications and what the component is going to be used for

The guy is asking what he needs to learn and where to do it I'm just giving him my two cents, it's up to him whether he uses it or not. I know you can do coded on anything for anything, he is a maintenance engineer considering his employer has asked him to learn to weld I am saying he needs to learn to weld pipe that carries food stuff to achieve a 100 percent purge, and pipes that carries steam to a level he would be able to pass a 6g test. my personal opinion base on my knowledge of food factory's and there maintenance staff
