Advice on economics

The money isn't even relevent unless you get out alive. I wouldn't weld in a shed any more than I would in a bedroom. Bottom line if it goes up in smoke you've got to get out of either.

i got out of my shed in good time and put the fire out before anything got seriously damaged, just stick to a few simple rules...fire extinguisher by the door with the pin pulled out ready, make sure you have a very clear path to the door, keep flamable bottles away from where you are welding (this was my downfall...bottle of meths [proper meths too] on the bench about 10" from where i was welding...)

I'm sure there are lots of precautions to take to make things a little safer I'm just not too comfortable about the idea of welding in a wooden box. A lot goes on around us that we are oblivious to when the lid is snapped down

yes, actually that is the reason i stopped welding in there...i was quite comfortable with my ability to put any fires out but not comfortable with the fact that i didnt notice the fire had started until i had finished welding and lifted the lid...if i had been doing a long run the entire shed would have been on fire before i noticed...i actually made that very point in my comment about it being a bad idea to weld in a bedroom...

I know it's a big American thing that weve all heard and seen "when the hood drops the .............. Stops" but there is a lot of truth in that or at least when mine drops anyhow. The other day she claimed to of called me 5 times to tell me she had made hot sausage rolls. Needless to say I was gutted to find them mostly gone and cold when I got in. I tend to lose my external senses when I'm welding and concentrating so chances are Id end up in the middle of a major blaze before I realised if I was welding in a wooden shed. Perhaps others that do it frequently are better at keeping a 3rd eye out. Id be hopeless.

Ive caught my trousers alight before and as you say didn't even notice till the lid was lifted and that's the only time it felt hot when I noticed lol

Yes I've done that too...although I knew something was up when my leg got unbearably warm, thought I was leaning on some warm steel so stopped to look and my knee was on fire
