I bought my missus a Nikon a few years back, produces some nice results even in my ham fisted mitts - I did a bit a bit of research and it was almost 50/50 split between canon and Nikon at the time, this was a better price so I plumped for the Nikon and we've been more than happy with the choice.
I had a Panasonic fz5 bridge camera before that (still got it actually!) which gave decent results but you (or at least we did) really notice the increase in quality and flexibility with an slr. I think since then more modern bridge cameras have come on leaps and bounds so may be worth considering?? Since we got ours I've fallen out of touch with what's hot and not.
