Advice Needed - Coding

Hi, this is my first post here however I have browsed these forums for a couple years now.

Im 24 based in Bedfordshire and have been welding for 4 years now, I feel as though my current job is a dead end and I want to push foward in my career.

I have some C&G quals and also experience in MIG and TIG, but I have no welding codes and don't understand them well, I want to increase my chance of employment by obtaining some.

I have found a place near me called Conventry Welding Workshop where they offer courses in BS4872, BS EN287, BS EN288. I am funding this myself and would like some advice in which coding would be most beneficial to me, also which is the best metal/thickness to do.

I want the codes to help me get into structural/architectual work and also to show I am a competent welder. Thanks.

welcome to the forum aston, sorry cant help you with the code thing but I have worked for years in both areas you mention without any codes, don't know if its different now but if your a competent welder fabricator knock on a few doors, you never know, good luck

just knock on some doors, beg a weld test and go from there, codes mean nothing to anyone unless they happen to be doing the exact welds you've got codes in, its much better to get a start and then get the company to pay for coding, unless its changed of late, codes don't transfer from company to company with you.

I went that route after I left the yard, and ended up doing a lot of structural and architectural stuff

The very few codings ive obtained are now well out of date and mean nothing now but the problem here is specifics. You could become coded in a certain process/position/material thickness etc that would have no relevance to the company you seek and therefor you've wasted your time. Your first step is to get a cv sorted and in the hands of the man with the position. You've already made the right approach by having some quals and experience which can lead to a weld test. After that it's down to you. Provide a good test and impress on interview and you may secure a position. This is now the point where codings are obtained (if needed) the company should then put there hand in the pocket and invest it in you. It's in there interest to provide you with the coding to suit there work and business needs. Going out and getting them now is a mine field if you don't know what to get them in. Asking us what coding you should get is like asking to predict lottery numbers, we cannot predict where you'll end up. The other thing is they have a short shelf life if your not using them and after you've obtained the coding every day your not in work using it is your investment going down the swanny. Knock on doors and ring around, hit the websites with what you have and at the first opertunity show em what your made of with a blinding weld test. Good luck.
