advice from more experienced!!

Hi All,need info on tigging up motorbike frame

presuming on argon gas??
Only problem is what rods do i use

frame is chromemoly steel,and yes it was originally gas brazed,
but reliably informed easy to tig


So please could the more experienced out there guide me in the right direction

Why not TIG braze it?

There has been a whole thread on this very recently. I'm presuming that the reason they didn't weld it in the first place was because of the effects heat would have on the steel.

Thats probably a 4130 Chrome molybdenum tube, Ive used AWS ER80SD2 filler rods to Tig these, alternatively you could use an austinetic stainless 312, depending on the thickness of the repair you may need a bit of pre and post heat to prevent cracking, pure argon and a thoriated tungsten, and if its a repair make sure you clean the joint properly before you start.

Might be worthwhile contacting the folk who made the frame, see what they suggest (at least they'll have the spec of the steel). Many of the guys from 30 years ago are still around and take an interest in their old frames (although just about everyone is doing aluminium frames now).

I seem to recall that one process that was (fairly) popular back then involved powdered bronze and flux being deposited through an oxy/acetylene torch. Never saw it done, but remember swapping some blue goggles for some parts with someone who was doing it. Was said to produce incredibly neat joints.
