The aim:
Add remote, stepless output current control to a mighty midget 200a engine drive.
The plan:
Use a saturable reactor between the output windings and the output rectifier. Varying the DC control winding in the saturable reactor varies the output current from the windings.
This thread will document the build of the reactor. I think I'm going to start with a few gutted microwave oven transformers to get the transformer laminations, but this will depend on the calculations for the coil windings....
There is literally a TON of stuff on google patents from the 50's-80's from the likes of lincoln/hobart/miller on how to use saturable reactors in this application - with circuit diagrams as well
