acme thread?

got an old portable vice that i want to use the screw out of for a clamp to go on my bandsaw.
how do i found out what size it is so i can get tap?

Get some nuts of various sizes from a supplier and whichever fits the thread is the size you want. Would it be easier to just obtain some threaded bar (studding) with nuts you know will fit something like M12x1.5. My local bolt shop sells it for about £1 a metre or will sell me off cuts for little money. If I take stuff in they will check me the size and sell me or get bits made in oddball sizes.

He is asking for Acme thread nuts not ordinary metric - sort of square / trapidzoidal cross secton as used on clamps and vices for it's strength.

Frequently manufacturers don't stick to standards on acme, however Tracey Tools carry a range of taps, and google will give you standard dimensions. Beware there is standard and truncated acme floating arround

Yes I know but does it have to be acme or is it just being used because it's what he has? I would think internal Acme threads would be very difficult to form without access to a lathe, you can buy Acme thread nuts from lathe suppliers.

You can buy Acme taps. Plenty on you know where. I'd also give Tracy tools a call as well

Have you any old screw/scissors car jacks knocking about the garage, I have cut them up for various clamps in the past.

Yep and they have plastic nuts usually. You can make acme nuts by boring some delrin to the pitch diameter, cutting it in half then clamping the two halves over the thread and heating the screw with a paint stripping gun. When it's hot enough the thread will form and the nut halves will weld together.
