Accurately Cutting Thick Steel?

I have an exhaust downpipe to fit to my car but the metal divider in the opening is too tall to fit in the recess of the turbo exhaust port. The metal divider needs reducing in height by about 5mm.

If I took it to an engineering shop, is there some accurate and tidy way they are able to cut the divider rather than just a hand held angle grinder.

It is quite thick metal and I don’t want to make a mess of it by having a go with my own angle grinder. I always find it hard to make perfectly straight cuts with one.

clamp a piece of steel along side it the correct distance out and grind down to it . no chance of just guessing it then or cutting more out than it should be

An engineering shop would just mill that down by 5mm.
It would be a PITA to clamp so would probably be an hours labour.

You want an accurate method of cutting, but your measuring is "about 5mm" I'd do what brightspark suggested.

Cut 4mm off with your grinder and file the rest.

you can cut quite accurately with an angle grinder

Scribe, cut either grinder or hacksaw, and file to final dimension. That way be nice square edge and bang on size.

Why does it need to be so precise ?
Is it the protrusion you're referring to if so, it doesn't look as if it's a gas tight fit, so why the precision...

Accurate and quick *is* an angle grinder. If you can't get it within half a mm with an angle grinder you need to stop drinking before the job...

Sorry, but this is not a real queston it is procrastination, get the angle grinder out and off you go, it has taken longer for you to post this thread than it would take to do the job, you do not need micron precision for this. "close enough for government work" will be fine.

Sorry, I don't mean to denigrate your question but it really is a simple task.
