Accelerating rust?

I have some lengths of 5mm bright mild steel rod that I want to take the shine off. Paint doesn't stay on for long so I thought the alternative is to get a nice coat of rust.

I'm sure there are ways of making things rust more quickly but can't recall one right now.

Any ideas?

'fraid not with vinegar,in fact it'll do just the opposite, try dropping some rusty nails[or anything else for that matter] into a bowl of vinegar overnight & the next day the rust is gone & they have a dull grey coating where the rust was,it's gr8.

Brake fluid turns metal rusty rather quickly, but not something I would want to splash around with a paintbrush, nasty stuff. Read instructions on tin regarding precautions.

Go on Fleabay and look for ammonium chloride.

Does the job perfectly, scrub it on with a scotchbrite cloth, 24 hours later,job done and it looks a tidy finish as well.

A bit of guttering sealed off, or what ever suitable for the size. Disolve salt in some water dunk in then leave in atmosphere, rinse and repeat. Cost nothing. Or just make sure its oil free and leave outside.

Theres three things you need for rust, potential difference, electrolyte and oxygen.
If you put the steel in water, aerate the water with a fish tank air pump and stone. To help if you could put a dc voltage of say 12v across the water and the steel to improve the potential difference. Iwould say use plastic tubs for the water other wise the metal tub might rust more quickly.

i left a tub of pickling paste for stainless steel open at work on time , came back the following morning and everything non-stainless was red with rust ,

give that a shot if you have any.

I can recall working at a galvanising plant hanging doors (I'm a chippie) and in the course of a couple of days all my tools had a fine layer of rust, from acid in the air I believe.

Imagine working there for a living, you'd rot from the inside out.

I sprayed a steel statue I'd made with a mixture of plain salt and water....rusted quite heavily in a couple of days just from the high humidity we have here!!

Brick cleaning acid, hydrogen peroxide or sea water, i've never had a right lot of success with salt water i've made myself.

Brick acid, 5 litres £5 from any builders merchant
But don't use it within half a mile of your tools, someone spilt some by my bench and to this day my bench top rusts over the weekend...........
