Ac balance on Kemppi

Ok just a quick one (hopefully) got a new machine on the way Kemppi 2300, and I've been reading through the manual.. Bit confused on the ac balance range.

Ac balance States that it's from 0 to -50, factory settings -25%.

The fact it adds a % symbol in the manual after the 25 that confused me.

So is saying 0% to -50% EN?

0% is more EP, -50% is less EP.

normally if a welder says 30%-70% it's refering to the EN % of the AC wave?

So,

100 - % = EP%

I.e adds up to 100% for one cycle, right?

So what is the scale lol, because zero can not be full DCEP and going to half way so equal.

My guess is 0% is 50/50 and taking it down to -50 must be full DCEN... But that would also make no sense at all, as it wouldn't be AC then, so maybe 75% is -50%, jumping to some very big conclusions here lol

If that was true the range is from 75%EN to 50%EN

If it was that seems like an odd range to have, my other guess is that if you wanted to go the other end of the scale then you have to switch the leads round, because in theory at 50/50 balance it would weld the same in either plus or negative pole for work piece.

That would give you 75%EN To 50%EN Switch leads then 50%EN To 25%EN...

Are you meant to switch the leads on the front of the machine?

The manual seems a bit lost in translation lol MIght make complete sence when I recive the machine but at the moment bit confused.

Hopefully you can see my logic here and I'm not just being flat out 100% dumbass, I like to fully understand things so I won't rest till I know this answer haha

That is strange my fronius machine has a dial which in the manual state 15-50 ep. Which looking at it from a DCEN point of view means at minimum it's a balanced 50/50 wave and at max
it's 85% DCEN 15% DCEP. Perhaps your kemppi is the same. 50-0 maybe means at min it's a balanced wave and at max it's 100% DCEN.
Just a guess mind but that would make sense if it's explained like my fronius.
I'm sure all will become clear when you get it and have a play.

Ha so I was kinda close in my logic :-)

So Ylu never change the grounding cable on this machine, I'm used to my r-tech, so which do you connect the grounding lead to + or - and never change them, why is there two posts if that's thr case..

One of the two posts is for stick/SMAW as the TIG torch is powered via the gas connection. You'll have to read the manual to confirm which of the two dinse terminals should be used for the earth return lead but it's probably the -ve one as the polarity of both processes is selected on the front panel to save having to swap leads about

They're Finnish, an ex of mine is half Finnish and her mothers side of the family were all totally bonkers. Probably made sense after an evening in the sauna drinking marskin ryyppy and beating each other with birch twigs before rolling about naked in the snow

Haha cheers, it's not so obvious as different brands do it different ways, I'm guessing -ve also, but the rtech was the other way round, torch was in the -ve slot.

I think it is even more complicated than that.
I have the service manual for that welder and in the hidden menu there is an option to set the AC balance maximum and the AC balance minimum. So the actual percentage would also depend on what these values are.
By the way I once emailed Kemppi asking them what parameter A23 is for in the setup menu (neither the user manual nor the service manual covered this) and this was their answer:
This parameter A23 means: = grn/nor. Tungsten electrode type selection: green/normal

Didn't know about the hidden menu on Kemppis, there's one on my v205t that they tell you about in the manual but i suspect you can adjust a bunch of things that aren't covered in the user manual as there's a LOT more parameters in the menu than are listed/described. Parameter A23 sounds like it's to do with arc starting?... green (pure) tungsten has a higher electron work function or something that means it doesn't strike as easily as the usual suspects

The negative is for the TIG torch (with positive earth)
The positive is for the stick welding stinger (with negative earth)

The TIG torch can't be moved as it's also the gas on the kemppi, so earth cable when doing dc or ac stays in the negative pole on the machine.

Normally TIG DC is EN isn't it, so it's backwards?

Yep very much like mine. The machine has a switch to change polarity DC - DC + and AC. The cables stay put.
I would not say it's backwards it's just DC Tig demands the load off the electrode as the electrode in this case is not the consumable

0% on the display means that we get 50% positive and 50% negative.
-50% on the display indicates an increase of 50% on the negative current (which normally is at 50%) which equals 75% total.
So if someone were to go to the service menu and increase the allowable value to its maximum of -80% we would get an increase of 80% on the time of the negative current therefore 90% total.
