About UV filter in welding mask

Hi everyone.

It could be a silly question but... The filter in the welding mask is allways activated, I mean, Is it a pasive filter? To explain better the question, If I use the mask without batteries and the mask desn´t darken, it will continue blocking the UV radiation?

I´m not going to use the mask without batteris, is only an example, but I would like to know better the behavior of the mask.

yep even in passive mode your uv protected , however the darkness will cue your pupil into opening wider , and the bright bits that follow wont make seeing easy ... but it wont do you harm at least in the short term.

Yes. Any decent welding mask will be made of plastics and glass that are always 100% opaque to UV. There may be some exceptions ! The ADF is only for the visible spectrum of light - LCD would never be adequate for UV protection due to the way light passes.

Thats not to say the exteme brightness of the arc is in any way safe to look at when the filter does not trigger, but you wont get arc eye. If its too bright it can easily damage the eyes.

This happened recently when my old cheap mask failed, I continued with sunglasses on underneath Eyes were fine, no arc eye, but it was not pleasant and dont recommend it. Dipped tbe tungsten many times.

No no, I´d never use the mask withot autodarkening, it was only and example to explain my self better in english. I only wanted learn about it behavior.
