About to spray 2K, is my protective gear good enough?

I am going to be painting 2pack in the next few months. I went to the local paint supplier to ask thier advice and they said don't bother with airfed, just wear my normal 3m breathing mask, paint the 2k and get the hell out of the workshop, however I'm not happy after reading up on 2k on this site.

I have a large workshop running a 200l 14cfm compressor I will use for the painting, I have a second Hydrovane 6cfm compressor on wheels that i intend to wheel outside the workshop and site it well away from the doors to supply air fed mask. I have no extraction facilities in the workshop.

I have a DeVilbiss Pulsafe MPV G2 full face airfed mask, I`ve just renewed the visor and foam seals etc, it has a filter on waistband whcih I presume is charcoal filter? Obviously I will be donning gloves and paint suit, the mask has a cotton head cover which attaches to the rear of the mask to cover hair etc.

Is the Devilbiss safe to use spraying 2K? what filteration do I need between the hydrovane and the devilbiss belt filter?

Sorry for long winded questions but want to be safe and not sorry.

You mask sounds fine for spraying 2K as long as your 6cfm compressor will supply enough air, I don't know how much the mask consumes? However I would suggest trying to set up some kind of extraction. If nothing else the vapour build up will make it difficult to see after a short time.
And well done for seeking a second opinion on the safety equipment. Everybody has a different tolerance to nasties such as 2k paint and you may well have been fine spraying with a fly mask, but equally one exposure may have been too much. Is it really worth the risk?

If you are simply doing a one off job and not working with 2K on a regular basis take the advice of the paint supplier.

This is not to say that the adverse effects of using 2k paints are not very unpleasant, but in all but a very few isolated cases, these effects are cumulative, in much the same way as smoking one cigarette is not likely to do lasting harm, but smoking for say 30 years may well kill the smoker.

On the other hand if you are intending to use 2K materials on a regular basis, then it would make a lot of sense to get the proper safety gear, and keep it in proper order.

If your paint supplier is telling you to "get the hell out" when using a paper mask he's admitting the mask isn't safe.

It's not how quickly you get out that matters, it's the length of time you spend inside.

as for one off's see a young guy have hospital treatment on his first try.with just 3m filter mask.

Thanks for quick replies; I have three cars I want to paint in the next year or so so I don't mind investing in the proper gear;

I already have the 2nd compressor and the Devilbiss airfed system so obviously want to use it. Not sure on what the mask consumes, I'm not clued up on compressors but I think that the Hydrovane will put out 6cfm all day long, it has no air chamber reservoir to refill, it just runs constantly and puts out air on demand if that makes sense?!

It was the local paint supplier, their offical line was they won't sell me the 2k paint without me having airfed; I asked what airfed to get (before I got the Devilbiss system) but the guy on the counter said don't bother as he sprayed 2k all the time without and just "got the hell out" in his words!

That's terrible advice from the paint supplier. The equipment you mention should be perfectly safe for home use, that's what I would equip myself with if I was spraying 2K; covering all skin and an air-fed fullface mask.

Use your air-fed mask.

Pretty sure that when we used them in a commercial plant, we worked out that that mask used about 6-7 cfm

You'll need an oil filter at least between the compressor and the mask.

Every time you come out the bay check the plastic air feed at the bottom of the mask for signs of oil

Thanks for the official link, they are all using the same mask as mine so I've got that right!

Next item on the list is an oil filter then and sort out some extraction system.

For a bloke who calls himself 'Engineer' your safety advice is quite shocking!
This forum is aimed at diyers, they come on here expecting good advice from knowledgeable people and you suggest that?
