I am new to this marvelous forum and have noted that people are having problems with rust.
I am only an amateur and still a welding learner but I have always given the outer layers of my wire reels a good spray of trusty old "WD40" when leaving them unused and "in storage" for any more than a couple of days.
A 75% full 5kg reel was left on a mountain top in Transylvania for 5 winter months and I authorized a local to use my machine in an emergency. He had perfect results without being told about the treatment -- I'd forgotten to warn him -- so he didn't even clean the wire.
There was apparently no rust whatsoever noticeable. As the temperature was down to -25 to 32 Celsius in this period it may have been too cold for dampness to cause rust but this treatment works in a humid London Spring/Summer.
If you have to use the welder just after spraying the reel: no problem Any surplus just flares off without apparent problem.
I think that this must be because WD40 is so light an oil that it doesn't cause pollution. Maybe I am building up future problems -- I have a plastic liner in my machine.
Any comments welcome!
Hope others find this useful
