but that is the same for every car I have look at, and from what I can see the more expensive the car was to begin with, the more there are of them being broken

i grew up with Fords, the old ones were good but my last one was junk, the bottoms of the doors went rusty - dealer not interested, diff bearing started to rumble at 70k and at 75k the fuel pump went, I got rid of it and bought a Passat td & it's still going strong at 160k and the dealer sorted out a rust blister that popped up on one wing - full paint survey = two new wings and a front end respray FOC!

It's your choice but there will never be another Ford on my drive!

the dmf and clutch are expensive to replace last one I did was around 350 - 400 for the kit, they suffer from split hoses from the intercooler, quite a few suffer from the waste gate seizing on the turbo

Not infallible though, mate of mine has one and it's drove him mad with battery drain problem. It's been to Volvo and at least 3 other auto electricians and still not sorted.

yeah, crank and cam sensors are known faults, cam sensors are expected to last 8ish months. did mine about 6 months ago so considering doing it again soon. only 12 quid to buy and 20 mins to fit

last of the reliable Volvo's was the 740/940s V70 just get more electronics more problems

was the cam sensor that I changed, I have been told by a few mechanics that they are known for failing. the car I have is the first of this model with all the sensors and complicated ecu systems and wasn't properly tested before being put into mass production apparently.

the mondeo wasn't worth buying. the car didn't quite live up to the advert. for a start he claimed it had full leather, which it didn't, also claimed it had aircon, which it didn't and it had done 20k miles more than the advert said. I knew there was a reason I stopped looking in the local ads.

have been told by a mate that there is an auctions house not too far from me that deal in vans and such, fair prices and have on site garage, all vehicles serviced before auction etc and come with 3 month warranty so will be popping along to that soon, if I can pick up a van I don't really need a car, the missus has a 5dr seat leon to ferry the baby around in.

that is true, but with the ecu shut down nothing would work, I found that out when I took it off to do the engine mounts, hadn't quite connected the main plug back up and it wouldn't do a thing.

ran diagnostics on it earlier and there are no stored faults,

I hate anything with an ECU with a passion, going off on a slight tangent, we had a tractor in at work that would work fine for weeks for us, as soon as it went back to the customer it would throw up a fault code and engine go into 'limp home mode' and then cut out completely.

The faults that were being logged didn't make much sense, so we tested the wiring, power supply, sensors and everything was ok. Even tried new sensors and another ECU still no joy. Eventually having talked with the senior Dealer support guy, they sent us a new hex-file for the ECU and bingo all was ok. Somewhere how the hex-file on the ECU was corrupted but it still worked 99% of the time and all since the hex-files are coded to each individual engine when we copied it to the new ECU the problem went with it.

The newer tractors can have upto 5 or 6 ECU's :-(
