AA Breakdown Cover

As someone who has previously received excellent service and even defended them, I do not know what has changed (well I do actually, price gouging while making cuts to UK staff)

My renewal came through at the end of last year almost 3 times its previous level!

I made multiple attempts to contact them, the only way to speak to a human was by whatsapp....

Long story short, they refused to engage unless I paid the first month, then they would discuss prices, I kept refusing and have just had a protracted discussion on whatsapp

Decided to try the RAC, called them to make sure the cover was correct (2 cars one driven by me, one my wife) and spoke to a very nice person on the phone who could not have been more helpful

Rather humorously the AA "Survey Bot" has just been in touch. I really hope the replies are read by a person

The AA was a proper enthusiasts motoring club once upon a time. I remember the days of getting the AA handbook, complete with UK roadmaps, plus other member benefits. I still have the map section of the handbook, which has been particularly useful over the years, because of the tidal constants marked on the maps. The cost of membership rose over the years, more or less gradually at first, and then followed an exponential curve, with nothing to show for it in return, until the cost became ridiculous in the end. There seem to be fewer AA vans around nowadays, and much of the recovery work seems to be done by third party contractors. Ended up going with 2gether, who give about the same level of cover, for one tenth of the last quoted AA price.

RAC are a 10000x worse than aa in every way. last time i had a breakdown (on a fleet rac policy that supposedly gets priority service) the estimated arrival time was 8.5 hours! and that's the estimate.(i cancelled as the lease company dealt with it another way) ime it usually is several hours past the first estimated time. get brittania. never had to wait more than a hour.

This is always my fear, I used the AA once last year and they were there within 15 minutes, but why should the price triple?

My youngest was going to Glasgow the week before last and saw an elderly couple looking a bit distressed whilst standing next to their car. They had a flat and couldn’t change it, so phoned RAC. They were told it would be several hours before help came. Son got his jack and tools out had it changed in minutes. They were less than an a hour from Glasgow!

I had AAA once....refused to tow my dead truck.
Switched to another vendor, similar problems.

I now get my Towing insurance on my car insurance, a simple add on (IIRC $45 a year), no problems.

They've been pestering me ever since my cover with them expired a few months ago. Not offered a discount or anything, just bothering me to renew. Calls, emails, letters. Take the hint!

RAC are god awful... We were heading off home in the early evening back to London, found that the clutch had gone, ended up waiting until 3 in the morning for somebody to show up. According to them, they had one person covering the whole of South Wales and he was occupied.

Britannia Rescue are the only ones worth having. AA, RAC, and GREEN FLAG are firkin useless.

I dont know if they do a car option, but when I had bike, Axa Assistance, included with insurance, was very good. They dont pretend to have a useless fleet, instead they get a local contractor out to you asap. Very short wait times if theres one in your area.
However, theres a silly age limit and my stuff is too old.

In 30 years I think I've needed a breakdown call out about 6 times!

Last time was around 2 years ago...car totally immobile blocking the lane...narrow/busy country road...I think they quoted 5 hrs but may have been 7 hrs.

I moved to Britannia after that...and I've started storing some basic tools in the car.

Yes it is, our camper is 20 years old & we have full Europe cover

My Dacia came with their breakdown cover....in the small print they don't cover flat tyres...and the car has no spare wheel!

A 5-7 hrs wait isn't unusual these days I think.....can you imagine breaking down at 11pm and your rescue arrives at 6am in the morning!

Last renewal I chose not to renew my 30+ year membership with the AA and took out a new membership with........the AA! Cheaper and with the same benefits even after phoning them up for a cheaper price.
