Evening Danny,
Well thats interesting to know,im going to be refurbing a freebie trailer soon and was thinking of changing the fixings for A2 or A4 grade stainless as they're all rusted to buggery anyway (where is that?) but i don't think i'll bother!

I dont know what the standard off the shelf ones are to be honest, i wouldnt expect them to be the really strong ones, or what the actual difference is.
Probably just as well to replace with new bzp or better still, spun galv ones.
I try and avoid stainless bolts whenever possible. They have a nasty habit or binding up. A bit of copper grease helps, but sometimes it still hapens.

Moly grease, Graphite grease, Mica or talc are recommended to stop galling (seizing), and using different grades of s/s - so a 316 bolt and a 304 nut for instance. And doing them up slowly - so leave the air torque wrench alone!
S/S is overated IMO. People like it cos it's shiny. Great if you've got a corrosive atmosphere, but otherwise, a load of grease or paint on a good ole 8.8 will do nicely!

Funnily enough I was looking into this last night
A4/80 has the same tensile strength as 8.8, but slightly less yield strength.

hi bigjoe, for a job like that, where the strenght of bolt is i would say fairly critical i would stick with zinc plated 8.8, the treads are well tougher, which is important if you got to bang them through some old holes or what not. price wise the plated 8.8 will be well cheaper. i made a little boat trailer for a guy with A2 bolts, some from ireland supplyer and some direct from china, and there was a massive difference between as far as corrosion difference was concerned, i'll let you work out which was worse. this thing was only for wheeling down a beach mind you, not banging about behind a car.
It was just an idea as ive been given a free trailer which i need to totally refurbish as its sat in a field for years,all the woods rotten the steelwork is solid so im going to cut it down as its about 8x4' now...i just need to extract from behind a barn surrounded by two huge mounds of dirt and rocks!

I'd have no qualms about using stainless in those grades for that application. If its corrosion resistance you want go for 316 (A4).
303 is also good and highly machinable.
I've been using it for 20 years in highly stressed applications on motorcycles (brakes, suspensions, wheel spindles etc) as well as non structural. Works just fine, don't listen to the scare mongers.

Maybe A4 could be an option as i wont be carrying heavy loads only upto 500kg (max) i would think but generally nowhere near that...i was just going to use stainless for minimal corrosion as it will be stored outside and if i have to change any panels etc then it should come apart easier...I dont know...i have'nt got the trailer home yet!
