A15 and A18 Mild Steel Rods

Whats the difference between the two?

I have A15 in 1.6mm and A18 in 2.4mm and was wondering what the difference was.

It's to do with the silicon and magnesium content, one has more than the other. Technic Al will have all the numbers most likely if he is around.

I assume in my little world where I am welding mild steel stuff like box section and sheet that the difference is negligible?

I have always used 0.6mm A18 welding MIG wire for years on cars with no problems.

You're spot on Mr. Shiney , for that kind of work it won't matter much the difference it makes on the weld beeing more brittle with one than with the other. Although you will find that the er70-s6 flows better ans gives a wetter puddle than the s2.

Sorry I'm used to the AWS refs, the a18 is the er70-s6 and the a15 is the er70- s2
