About three years ago I bought a Little Giant toolpost grinder for my Boxford. I didn't actually need it, at the time, but when was that important? I plugged it in, it went round pretty quickly, so I stuck it back in the box.
When I did need to use it it was obvious that something was amiss i.e. it was getting quite hot. I put a tacho on it and discovered it was only running at about half the rated RPM. When I dismantled it the cause of the problem apparent. There's a suppressor capacity inside the motor that has gone pop ( damaging the field coils in the process and hence resulting in the lower RPM and excessive heat)
You can see it's a delta arrangement which connects across the commutator and to ground. Question - does anyone have one, know the part number or a possible source? I think the manufacturer was Dubilier, but of course the armature decided that it wanted to rub away the manufacturer and part number.
It's about 1-1/2" x 5/8" x 1/4" I have cobbled together something from discreet capacitors, but they're quite large because of the operating voltage and would have to sit outside the motor.
Fingers crossed big time.
