A reasonable price for steel?

A bit of newbie question...

I've just had a price for some box section from a local suppler. This is my first trip into buying stock steel (previously have only welded replacement car panels).

Are these prices reasonable or rip-off? (I'm in Lancashire btw, if this makes any diffence)

All mild steel

50mmx50mm box section; 4mm thick; 7.5m long = £44.10
40mmx40mm box section; 3mm thick; 7.5m long = £26.60

Any thoughts gratefully received

Also, it's worth seeing what parker's website says, as well as ringing around all of the local suppliers and seeing how they compare.

Well assuming I'm looking at the same stuff on the parker website - my local supplier is way below the parker price - £72 vs £44.

Will try a couple of others, but I can't seem to find many near me.

I assumed that most any price quoted in this game would be +VAT, although I happy to be told not.

I'll try a couple of others, but there are none as convenient as this place - Barclay & Mathieson Ltd in Chorley - is just up from my office. Anyone else would have to be quite a bit cheaper to offset the fuel / delivery / hassle factor

B&M are expensive. Prices are what you will pay for a non account customer who hasnt used them before. Groan a bit about the price and they will probably drop a bit.

Right thanks. I'll ask around some local engineers / fabricators and see if any are friendly enough to recommend somewhere.

On the off chance, does anyone know anywhere with a good DIY price & service - Clitheroe - Blackburn - Chorley (my daily commute).

Don't know if it will help but I use the metal supermarket for what I need and sometimes just for a price to help me shop around. Although they are not very local to you they do deliver too. Maybe they are worth a look?

I bought 1 x 7.5m length of 100x50x3 last week. £38+vat they charge £5+vat for local delivery, but I collected myself.
