A quick one for the builders

Hi chaps,

Can someone satisfy my curiosity?

I've seen houses built form stone, brick, block and all manner of other materials, and mostly using some sort of thermal block for the inside wall. But today I saw a house (or rather an extension) using Thermalite blocks on the outside walls.

Is this normal? I've just not seen that before.

I’ve seen it up here (Orkney) but thought it was just a Scottish thing as some of their building regs are different.

Hate the things, Im sure Thermalite blocks are designed to increasse noise from neighbours

They are also prone to hairline cracking as well. Personally I would not want to use them on an external wall as they soak up water like a sponge.

You can only assume that they will be heavily clad. Either that or his mate from down the pub is building it on the cheap

Brickies like to use them due to light weight and easy to cut

Will be render or clad

Easier to achieve sap calcs for large glazing areas as better r value

Last house I built was thermalite blocks inside and out, rendered on the outside. That was thirty plus years ago and not had any issues with it.

It does seem to be a job that's getting done piecemeal!

There are some house around our way that's are built entirely from polystyrene blocks. I'm sure they will be warm, but they look very easy to damage.

House over the bottom from us has just been re-rendered. The old stuff was stripped off, windows all masked and the new was sprayed on in 3 separate coats, levelled off in between. It dries a light grey colour.

I have seen that around our way.

ive seen them used more so large scale building sites

its the one thing that bugs me with planning the big companys get away with saving pennys with blocks but the little man has to build with concrete blocks

its only 5-10 difference and large scale deliverys will get them even cheaper than the little man theres just no need to penny pinch even further than what they do

Sounds like ICF. They build em like Lego , then the inside is filled with concrete and rebar. (Insulated concrete formwork)
