Good evening all...
A quick question chaps.i am looking for a slab of metal for my work bench.i am looking for something about 40x600x600mm .it will be a good resting pad for me to tig tig tig on...I had a look on the bay and been to my local yards down hear in Essex. ..if any of you chaps have something similar that you would be prepared to sell would be cool..iffy it's bigger or thicker that's fine....cheers...

I have a massive work bench that I made..and still haven't finished it yet....but it wood..I will be making a metal on later on.but a nice size slab of flat metal will do the trick for now

I had a 24" square cast iron surface plate for sale not long ago.

I'd of though that's the only way you are going to get something or those diamensions easily.

40mm thick puts it in the realm of armour plate!

your be looking for road plate

You'll find it easier to get hold of 25mm because that's commonly used for road plates. At 600 square you ain't bending it either.

Try to find companies in your area that do profile cutting they may have a corner on a cut out sheet going in the scrap but 600x600 is going to be pushing it.

Just been chatting to me old man.and found a place not far up the road that does all sorts of industrial size metal and fabrication. .and old friend of his...HMMM.he kept that quiet. ....I might find something there. ..but thanks for your responses. A piece of 8 or 10 mm will be more than adequate as a weld platform, I have a couple around that size that I use on top of the bench sometimes or to take out on site, a couple of box sections tacked underneath lifts it up so you can get a clamp on the edge,

My bench top is 10 or 12 mm and is fine for anything you'd be doing in a shed, unless you have bulldozer engines rolling around on it. I have never seen anything like 40mm used in a bench, in a surface plate maybe as it has to be thermally stable i suppose.

I have an l shaped bench , 40x40x 2 box frame with 90x90x3 legs and I only used an 8mm top and it's more than adequate for the job! 40 mm is a serious lump of metal, have you considered how the hell you re going to lift it on?

if you do , im still looking for a 48" x 30" bit for my bench, but only need it like 10mm thick.

Erm.i ain't sure yet to be honest. ..but I was thinking a little on the large side...25 mm would be adequate I thinks
