A couple of small lathes.. Your experienced thoughts please

£600 gets you into much larger lathes. Far more versatile than those.

which looks a better bet if you want a myford, but still pricey for my money. I'd keep watching and go for a boxford or harrison, you'd get a good one for £500 if you're patient and it will do so much more, as well as giving better surface finish due to running smoother and being quicker.

Round bed lathes are only ever going to be good for light cuts. The motor looks to be a karger one iff another lathe and isnt connected. Theres no countershaft so soeed range is going to be limited.

The best bit of the Myford ML2 is the inverter drive but again there is no countershaft and onky one pulley looks to be toithed so all speed ranges are going to be governed by inverter snd limit torque. For the same money a decent ML7 or even super 7 should be available or if you've got room a larger industrial lathe.

My advice would be buy a popular model that you can buy spares for easily. Boxford, Myford, Harrison, Colchester. Buy as big a lathe as you can. Be wary of buying some antique curiosity. They can make very big paper weights if bits are missing, not functioning or worn.

You can't go wrong with a Super 7. I make loads of bike parts on mine and love it. I have a Dore Westbury mill as the perfect partner for it.

Don't buy either, Myfords are overpriced for what they are. Raglan, Boxford, Southbend, Atlas, Regal are all better machines and cheaper but are slightly bigger than a Myford. There are others as well but these were just off the top of my head. Myford owners will bite my head off but I have had one and they are well made but just small and pricey in comparison to the others that are built as well but are bigger, more capable and cheaper.

i have a Myford super 7 also, I'll be honest for what you pay for them you could get a bigger lathe like a boxford or Harrison, but for the size it's hellishly useful

Pretty clean myford that.
Make him an offer and see where it gets you,I mean If I could have that picked up I'd go for it if the price was reasonable,the motor and inverter has to be worth something aside from the lathe.

Gents,the myford is good if he can get it for £500 or less? he only wants it for small parts so he don't need a massive block of steel sitting there in his lounge and despite what you're saying this lathe is far better than the mini lathes at £500.

You're forgetting to add the price of shifting the big ones and that ain't cheap,not to mention finding a place for it and moving it to that place.

Drummond's Roundbed was a later design; Their first lathes were flat beds. That lathe in the first post is no Drummond though. That looks to be adapted/modified from a task specific, (armature, valve grinding etc.), machine.

That ML2 is vastly overpriced Noods. That design isn't exactly great on rigidity, and you could easily pick one of those up for a quarter of that price, if you just take your time in keeping an eye out. You'll find similar spec. machines were made by a multitude of companies. That machine looks like it may have been cleaned up somewhat too, so by what method it was tidied up from it's previous state could have been detrimental to its precision.
