A couple of question about tools from a beginner.

Hi guys,

I am about to make an order on this spraygunsdirect, and I have a couple of question :

1. Protection Mask
I have choosen a mask for cellulose, and I am wondering if this one is any good?

Do you know how often we need to change the canister, and filter?

Are the canister and filter easy to find?

2. Spray Gun.
I think I will go for DeVilbiss FLG5 Budget Suction, I think it will be good as a first spray gun, what do you think?
About the maintenance of it, I have seen that they are selling maintenance/repair kit.
Should I get one of this?
Is it explain in them how to maintain it?
As you can imagine I have no clue how to maintain a spary gun

3. Filter/Gauge
I have seen that they are selling Filter and Gauge to add on the inline of the Gun.
Do you think I should get some? Is it really usefull?

4. Mixing
I did not take any mixing stuff. I suppose any kind of plaxtic cup will do the trick, but I might be wrong.
Do you think I should take some?

5. Preparation
To prepare the existing paint I have an orbital sander.
Which grid of sandpaper disk should I put on to sand the existing layer?
Should I use the orbital sander, or I need to do it by hand?
I kind bought the orbital sander for that so I hope I can use it

Do you think I need anything else?

go for the 3m mask (06941) alot cheaper for the same thing. its a throw way mask.the gun will do you fine.
most gun give you a blow up diagram of the gun and parts.but never seen any cleaning info.
if your new to d.a sanders stick with 280 grit fre-cut discs.the is a dry rubbing disc.
go any courser and you might get in trouble with it going to deep.
do you need filter? depends on what is on your compressor.
missus always moans that i nick her measuring jugs for mixing.lol

You think I should get a smaller set up, because I am beginner and then it will be easier to control?
Would it be fine for spraying cellulose paint then?

I have seen on their web site only the Sealey will come with small set up on my range price, or else I should get a JGA on ebay on second hand.
Maybe I should simply get a Sealey and see how the spraying is going?
Actually should I get a suction gun or a gravity?

About the d.a sander, I am new so about the 280 grit fre-cut disc. What does the fre-cut mean? I have not seen this mention on web site before.
Is this what I will need?

For the Filter, I don't have the spec of the compressor. I know that the hose is directly fixed to it there is no "cooling" line.
I can't add anything to this really it is not mine.
So maybe I should get a filter to help the water to be remove.
It is a big compressor with a outside filter put that is it.

I also though that the canister on the mask could be change then if it is disposable the 3M will do.

dont buy a 2ns hand jga as a kit will cost about 60-70 quid.
you can do good work with the sealey gun,
fre-cut is a name brand.
the sanding discs you have linked to are hook-its,costly.
stick-its are what i use.just make sure your d.a has a stick-it backing pad on it
you will need to add a filter if you have none.
i dont like to keep masks too long,they get crappy and smelly.
as for a 1.8 setup that is more for primers.
try celly and it will bucket it on.you'll never control it.as i said you want a 1.3 set up for celly.hope this helps
being in dublin you must have a paint supplier there.

Sounds the Sealey gun will be the man, for the job.
I have 3 cars and a van to respray, so I have to get good at it.

I got the story between the stick on and velcro, I was finding the price pretty expensive too.
I have just find this supplier http://www.abtec4abrasives.com/discs-paper-112-c.asp
They seems to have good price and deliver in Ireland.
About the stick on pad, I have on which has no hole I supposed it is better to get one with hole?
I did buy about €60 of disc 3 grid 40, 80, 120 but I think it is a bit too rough. Probably a silly purchase now...

For the Filter, does it need to be put on the gun or else I have to get something which need to be fix on the wall?

About paint supplier in Dublin, I got a very cold reception I have to say of one guy whom did not want to sell me what I wanted (apparently does not know what tech primer is!!! I was quite supprised).

Then I rang anothers 2 suppliers and they told me, they don't deal with celly as it is illegal in the country!!
So there were not really good to get advice.

I basically think they have no interest in amateur sprayer so I have kind a decide to find supplier online and get that deliver at home and safe me some hassle.

I have a quick question, about sanding :
1. Why people sand using wet and dry sanding paper and manualy instead of using a machine and dry paper?
2. How many disc do you need to sand a car? (so I will have a idea how many box I should buy)

using a da dry is ok for flatting down filler and feather edging paint but hand finish using wet and dry gives a smoother finish . a hand finish allways best

Can we not obtain the same finish by increasing the grit of the DA?

I have to say that everytime I have to sand something, I get borred very easily
I also find this process long and painfull.

i would never finish off with a da just not smooth enough marks show through and if you could get a fine enough disc it would be blocked up in no time

fit your filter to the wall,saves on the weight you have to hold.a full spray gun gets heavy for a newbie.
you can get finer discs,( i have discs down to1500.) for the d.a but take care,in the wrong hands you can do damage.
start with a d.a then finish off by hand rubbing with a block.

I think I understand a bit more, and I think I need to rephrase my question about preparation.

How should I prepare the old paint before respray?
Which sanding should I do (grit, wet-dry, dry, machine or manual)?

Basically I want to respray the same color, I will be leaving the old paint, and I will be using cellulose.

What is the best thing to do for preparation?

i would do it by hand(with a rubber block)and use 800 grit dry.do it wet and it will alway have a few drip the get blown out as your spraying.
you can go over orginal paint,or primer.i would primer first.then you can see where you've covered.
