a bit of dodgy welding?

Hi,

had a few days away with my wife last weekend and we had a run over to Rutland Water. Walked around a bit, sat in a hide or two and snapped a few photos of birds and things.

They have this scupture of a bird, quite impressive...




not sure, looks like stainless, but the welding looks more than a bit dodgy to me...










What do you reckon, splodged together with the wrong wire and/or wrong gas? It looks like two different welders to me. The body was done by someone in a workshop, maybe TIG'ed with argon but the legs and feet knocked up by someone else on site with a MIG and Co2?

It does look a bit iffy.

The main problem seems to be the tubing is mild steel plated with something and they have ground this off to weld it resulting in it rusting...shame really.

The tek screws holding it down are a bit poor.

Maybe made from a shopping trolley ?

Looks like its made from an old shopping trolley!

Plating has been ground back for welding, it appears they may well have used stainless wire for some reason.

Not even a bit of galv spray to cover the bare steel.

Shame, its a good sculpture, just not fantasically made, lots of sharp bits there aswell.

A bit grotty. As Hitch says, lots of sharp edges, nasty. Only a dodgy artist would be able to get away with that. A fabricator would get mullered for producing something with so many quality issues!

Looks good though.

Kind of ironic as welds like that are sometimes known as bird s..t welds in welders slang

I agree here, a nice idea, well shaped but badly excuted.
is it on display in a public space? all those spiky bits are crying out to snag some child's hand.
I reckon it is made out of shoping trolleys.

Maybe they were being ironic as most bodies of water have one or two shopping trollies in them at some time. Whoever did the sculpture had a good eye for it, but wasn't up to the welding. Shame.

Origins and use of Mullered

Hi,

it's open to the public, as you walk out of reception and go off to the main 'lagoons' it sits next to the path a couple of feet back. I didn't have to climb over anything to take the close-ups and there are no warning signs saying 'keep off', etc.

The site's owned by Anglian Water so someone could be in for some real dosh if they got hurt on it.

I wouldn't now that I've mentioned it here but the idea is my copywrite so I expect 10% of any compensation...

Might be student / art school ? Just at thought as I went to a Uni engineering dept and saw some dodgy welds, students building space frames for bike-engined race cars ... Similar catapult style welds.
