Doing up the garden of our old house, about 20 years ago, my dad dug up three stag beetle larvae (Google it, they're deserving of this thread's title ), he wasn't certain that's what they were so went indoors to check in a book, came back out and watched a blackbird scoop them up. They'd probably been growing three or four years just to be a tasty snack. We used to get loads of stag beetles at that house, I've seen one in the ten years since we moved away.

we get em quite often.......just pick them up and hide them in 1 of our disused out buildings.......they dont bite, just wriggle a bit....
WE NEED all the diversity we can get........
snakes, toads and Salamander's are all safe here.....

the next house has soposedly got scorpions, judgement is out on them as we have 3 nosey Boarder Collies to take care off......prob just chuck em over the fence onto next doors olive grove........

dont like killing stuff except files and wasps.......

when collecting parts outta storage for the move had a huge Asian Hornets nest......afraid they got the chop.....they kill honey bee's......!!!!!!!!!!
have a look at u tube....these bloody things hover outside a beehive and take em on the wing.......amazing really.......

I live in Lancaster (the other one) Ohio ACTP, Across The Pond. I had a stag beetle walk into the garage at night when I was working late. I put it in a glass jar and put an old kitchen towel over it. Went upstairs and got the Wife for show and tell. Walked right back down and seen the bug had clipped a 3/4" hole and left for the night.

Am I right in thinking the hawk moth is one of the few things we've got that are bigger than anything the US and Australia has to offer?

These things look scary - but they aren't - the wood wasp. That is not a sting behind it so please leave them alone.

The things are not common around here, I have only see two or three , in my whole life.

The caterpillars are very noticeable.
The ones that I have seen have stalks that look like four or six lady bugs.

This fella has a lot going on, found it while pruning a hedge last week, turns out to be a common caterpillar of a Tassle Moth.
