90 degree drive gearbox........

Hi all,
need a 90 degree drive for a future project........looked at new'un's but oh dear the cost........
so was looking for something used.......
needs to be at least 25mm shafts with a 1-1 gear ratio but 1-1,5 would do.......
the only thing I can think of is the early Belle mixers but I think a little small for what I want to do.......
any ideas what else uses them......where to look.....
no decent junk yards around me........
OR better yet anybody got 1 under the bench..........

The T drives are a lot stronger Frank, what kind of power/torque are you putting through it?

Gear box from a gass topper.

I used a Belle 150 gearbox on a machine, but it was worm drive at 40:1. The input shaft was 0.5 inches.

Those Belle ones won't take much power and have a reduction with a worm. If it is for what I think you want it for then addjunkie's grass topper box would be an idea. Must be loads hiding in barns. In fact, I will look across the road in the neighbours barn, full of old farm kit.

My employer breaks his topper gearbox at least once a year, so I've seen inside them, and I'm fairly sure the gear ratios are a long way from 1 to 1

Second the grass topper - ripped out one from my father's dilapidated topper to power a duck plucker.

Alternatively what about a final drive unit and weld / fix the diff portion so that it sends 100% of torque out at 90 degrees.

The one from our topper was 1:1

A lot of the ag stuff is not rated much over 1500rpm, probably best to wait and see what Franks application is.

well,
have a large ride on mower that has an underpowered16hp Honda.......the owner's lad drove it without any oil........they've bought a new'un and the wreck is mine........
been looking for a 20HP replacement, best I can get new is a £750 Kohler or used B/Sratton for 400 +++........either way theres a load of wiring to sort out plus exhaust, pully's belts etc etc........
and who know's what else to machine to get it to work right...........
so was thinking as it's gonna be a marathon what about putting a 2 cyl Kubota, Iseki diesel in it.....or something similar.........be nice if it were air cooled but there's enough room for the mod + the angle drive......most of the topper g/box's I've found here are way to big.......so was thinking about something inbetween.....perhaps of a machine in industry........
so the answer is 20HP at around 1500rpm........
U c I have 1.5 acres to cut, once per week and sometime twice and thats not including the paddock..........another reason to move......15 years, it's time for somebody else to take over now........off to hotter parts with no grass........hahaha......

Get a few sheep, better yet let someone keep their sheep(*) on your land and they'll pay you for the privilege. That's unless you don't want droppings left behind on your grass...

(*) other grass eating animals are available.

We did that in Norfolk. Farmer gives us a couple of lambs, usually a bit runtish, they graze happily on tethers that were moved every day. One went in our freezer, the other back to the farmer. Repeat. Just don't give them names....

The Kubota two cylinder diesel fitted to the Aixam etc cars is worth considering as a power plant. Water cooled 500cc.

Coil sprung usually 3.54 to 1. Series I think were about 4.7 to 1.

Depends, we do the same for pigs but they do get names. Our neighbour was having one so we had to name them Hitler, Musolini and Stalin. She didn't feel that bad then.

All our freezer animals get names....sausage, bacon, blackpud, mint sauce choppsy.....you get the idea.

Why not think out side the box. Buy a small second hand walk behind mower...loads cheap on selling sites, then go for the wild meadow look with just a path cut through it. Good for the bees and wildlife if any one asks.
