6mm bar off the coil. Metallurgists?

Another strange one.
My client was making a spider with legs in 6mm bar.
I have both the cheapo stuff the coil and bright finish.
To make the knees it is put a blob of weld on the bar and bend it below the weld.
On bar off the coil it broke everytime.
bright finish did not break.
then I quenched the coil stuff after welding and it did not break.
Last thought; I may have tried bending before it had cooled properly.

What did the break look like? Pictures tell a lot. Was it at the weld joint or was it the bar itself? What type wire was being used?

The mig wire is just standard mild steel,
The break looked whitish and quite jagged, I will look today, I think it broke to one side of the weld, along the join between the weld and the bar.
If I remember I will photograph it if I can find it.
