Hammer welding ?Place the panel on a sheet of copper or brass and this will conduct some of the heat away and act as a backing for any falling aluminium which may sag and drop.
This would also need hammer welding.
Yes this car was a works entry for SEBING in March 56 Chapman driving so it had to be light all the panels were 20 gauge on works cars.20 gauge is quite thin for 60 year old panels, I looked it up as 0.9mm
it might not be straight aluminium, don't know what they used on aircraft but land rovers used to be birmabright which is different and welds differently
no idea of how to tell the different flavours apart
At least you have the panels off, I have tried lumiweld with reasonable success on horizontal panels but vertical ones just ended up running down the panel
That was an interesting read ref hammer welding also it recommends i do long tacks not one run. thank you for the input. GOT ANY OLD PICK OF THE SIX OR SEVEN love to see them or does it hurt to much i feel your pain. The old chap who welded up the nose cone on our 6/7 had worked at Westlands for years brought his own torch & regulator made it seem easy, why did we sell it for peanuts had Chapmans name in log book as owner I put it down to being young and stupidWhat is Hammer Welding?
