6" grinding wheels

The wheels on my Draper grinder are getting (have got) a bit worn.
I use them on mostly mild steel motly for shaping not sharpening..
I have just looked at the internet and got buried under information, can anybody reccomend some that are not made of cheese or whatever.

Something general purpose will do. I opt for brand names to prevent the grinding wheel made of cheese syndrome, Flexovit or Norton for preference.

I just had a look at Norton wheels. soo many to choose from.
I think I am after aluminium oxide fine and coarse? or is medium and coarse a more normal mix?
Size for reducers? will this be on the sticker on the grinder?

What are you planning on grinding? The reducers merely reduce the size of the hole in the disc to tally with the spindle on your grinder, so specify your grinder spindle diameter when you order the discs.

Christ, that's a sign of bad memory when I can read your post and forget half of what you'd written by the time I reply. For the shaping, if you need to remove a fair old bit of material first to get to the rough shape you want, go with coarse. If you are generally close to the shape you want before you get to the grinder, and just need to remove a little bit before finishing it with the fine wheel, go with medium. Personally, I'd go with medium and fine.

For shaping duties he's right; watch your fingertips though!

I have to agree with Hitch here, additionally knowing the sort of work you do and the size of it could be potentially dangerous to say the least. How often does the work bounce off the wheel when you are grinding it? If a lot then you are in danger of the wheel exploding although its not common you are in that danger area. It means the mass of the item you are trying to grind is to big for the wheel.

This gives you a better understanding of wheel designations.

I have it all here in text book format but its a bit ermmmmmmmm to much to type as i'm lazy.


If the wheels you have, have nothing on them (and they should) on the blotter, try this. Give a call to your local cromwell tools sales team normally knowledgeable, also J and L industrial have a massive technical dept who are there to give you such help, take the info and go shopping

I only use a bench grinder on small items, for bigger stuff I use angle grinders.
Mainly tidying up edges on bits of strip or rounding up small components.
I am wary of bench grinders as potential face removers.
A linisher would be nice but probably pricy.
It is on my list of things to invest in. I had a go with a small hobby one and discarded it, piece of junk.
Just had a look on fleabay, near top of the list but have a few other priorities.
We will see how it goes this summer.

Which type did you try? The likes of the Clarke ones and similar always look cheap & flimsily made, IMHO.

It was crap, a combi thing, grinding wheel on one end and belt sander on the other.#
I chucked the belt sander bits and use it with a wire wheel on the other end.

A big 'proper' floor standing one will blow your mind - I use mine ALL the time. Highly recommended!

First up newer big vice, welding helmet, new worktop.
But there is work floating about.

We used to have a lovely 3 phase belt linisher at work, got scrapped when the work for it finished, no room to squeeze it into the maint dept

Chunko, i found some 6" grinding wheels in a cupboard today, some fine, some coarse. Can't remember the make, but they are good ones, hard as hell. I can let you have a couple if you want. I'll get the bore size tomorrow if you are interested?

Nice work, I did measure the bore today, being all clever I did not bother to write it down. 13mm is what I remember. Will check tomorrow.

Have a Clarke floor sta ding belt sander at work and its very good gets used lots for sanding metal occasional wood and sharpening stuff
