5mm wide U channel to hold perspex sheet

Has anyone seen and aluminium or steel U channel that is 5mm i/d.

Working on a wind deflector for my car and still in the design stage.

Add clear silicone to fill the 0.5mm gap, and account for expansion.

After feeling some 5mm sheet in hand I decided to go up to 8mm to avoid to much wobble.

I then found some 10x10x1 mm mild steel channel in B&Q which is good as I will be able it weld it to the frame.

I got on to this job over the last few days.

I traced out the outline of my old damaged windbreak frame, the netting had been ripped.






Then cut it down to size.




Drilled out the U channel from B&Q.



and fitted with some self tappers.




Made up four 2mm brackets.



then welded them in place.

Next cut out the perspex, metal cutting blade at low speed, no blade oscillation.






Trial fit.



Replaced the self tappers with a spot of weld.




Next on to sort out the rough edges.




240 grit on the long board.







Then 500, 800, 1200, 1500, 2000....




Final polish with Autosol.




Etch primer.



Halfords rattle can gloss on the frame to finish off. Perspex glued in with tiger seal.






Just got to finish off the car now to give it a try, should take no more than a year or so.

Don't even go there about damaging worktops! I had an accident with ours & now its due to be replaced! Best to keep the tools in the garage
