5Kg Spool on a Clarke 135?

Ok chaps, I've got hold of a 5kg reel of 0.6mm wire for a very reasonable price and because I'm going through the mini spools pretty quick.

Thing is I'm concerned that I'm going to lunch the diddy wire feed motor by asking it to turn the bigger spool.

Has anyone tried using a bigger spool on a hobby mig - Clarke or otherwise? Did it struggle? Am I best off transferring some wire across to a spare mini spool?

Any thoughts gladly welcome!

i ran 5KG spool in a clarke 90 easly and i still use that feed motor in the bigger MIG they are very low geared and the rolling resistance shouldnt increase that much

If your torch liner and the rest of the feed assembly is good the big rolls are no problem.

I use the 5kg reels in a Draper 1302T without any drive problems but the plastic reel holder broke due to the weight plus pulling the mig around the workshop and having to lift it into some places to gain access (semi industrial use). I had an ally one made and have had no more trouble.

I ran a few dozen 5kg rols through my clarke 130 with no problems, after 6 years the motor did run a bit slow, but it had been hideously abused.

Great, thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated! Didn't fancy fitting it if it was likely to kill the feed motor but looks like I'll drop the big reel on this weekend.

Should save me a few quid as those mini reels aren't lasting me too long at the moment.
