53-56 F100 steering box, stick welding excellence!

This is the steering box fitted to my '31 Ford Model A, fitting a 53-56 F100 box is a common conversion.

Hopefully most are done a bit better than mine, it was a bit slack so I had a peek inside.

Worm must have been a bit worn or broken off, so it was nicely built up with weld and presumably once hand filed smooth ish, that went well then!

Steering wheel shaft was beautifully grafted on, welded up and hand filed to perfection.

Steering wheel taper welded up and expertly hand filed to perfection.

Outer column welded to box with sheet metal spacer.

Hope you don't come across too many more on your car. After I bought my '50 Chevy truck over from the states I had to completely re-do the mechanics as it had lots of bodges like that.

Rebuild kit doesn't help at all if the races machined into the worm are pitted, have you checked them?

Ah yes, it’s all coming back to me now (it’s been 10 years ish). I do remember checking and they are. Is it junk then?

One mans junk is another mans treasure, but to me it's junk.

having said that I turned the pitted worm bearings down smooth in the one I have in my Chevy racer, no case hardening left, but drag racing on the beach ain't gonna wear it out!

I used a LR box on my last hot rod project, nice study piece of kit. I brought a rebuild kit, but found the worm galled, and a new one was about £100, so I just put grease in and left it. It turned okay, but you could feel it was a little bit rough in places.

That’s what I was planning to do at the time I think, but when I realised about the hardened surface I put it to one side. Perhaps it could be fixed with a big enough lathe cutting the shoulder off completely and sleeving over a new, hardened bearing surface. Out of my capabilities, equipment wise.
