4x4 chassis repair

Hi all,
Need to start reparing my truck chassis so cut out the rot and replace with new plate, flush not patched over.
For this job will 3mm mild do the job or should I look at specific type of plate steel?

Plan would be to cut out top to bottom only leaving 5mm from the edge where it's rotten.
Any tips or advice welcome

Are you sure there is 5mm of clean metal neat the edge?

You must get back to good clean steel. You'll normally find that the rot is alot deeper when you start cutting back.

So the usuall wat is th cut out the rot, clean up, cut out the new patch and weld it in.
Then prime and paint.

Think you could be right there, the idea is to do sufficient to MOT so I can move it about as I have limited space to work in my back yard, then take the back tub off and clean back to bare metal. Then look at it again and do what's needed (with advice and help )

2mm would be easier to form and is more likely to be what the chassis is made from so easier to weld to same thickness than thicker. No advantage to using thicker material either

I'm going to look at some plate tomorrow, need to start organizing this, would be easier in 2mm.

Inside seems to have more rot

If its just to get through an mot i'd just patch it. get it through and then do the proper restoration.

It looks like a section replace with fishplates over the joins to me. Not a patch over the hole exercise
That said I can't see were it is in relation the the chassis as a whole

ideally you should match the original thickness rather than go with 2mm because it would be easier. The difficulty is finding somewhere to measure it!

I have the nasty feeling that you are going to be chasing a lot further than you think to find something decent to weld to and in more than just that place as well

Think what I will do is post pics of the areas once I have cleaned it up/ to bare metal so the area/location can also be see.

I know what u mean about chasing the rot this is the last job I did on the hanger, then I will strip it and do a proper job in summer.

From your first photo I suspect that if you get a wire wheel on a grinder that entire chassis section shown will brush away!

I think I'd patch it over (bodge) for the test then cut it out and do it properly later as you plan. It's not hard to patch over it to MOT standards, but repairing that properly will probably be a far bigger job than expected and I would make sure I could go about it properly without having to rush or struggle with poor working conditions.

Its coming up 19 years old is that repair typical for that age or good or average.

Yes they rot bad, mine is an import ( has the small recessed headlights) and the japs don't prep/ protect there chassis over there. Back end chassis from leaf spring hangers back /shock mounts then rest off chassis to check out before u look on anything else to check.
I have spent a lot of time and money on this truck and will fix it up proper.
