4mm mild rod/wire

Got some of this in the past off Ebay which was not galvanised.
Last lot I got was and it's a pain to have to remove it.

Currently I can only see Galvanised on there

4mm is difficult to find in reasonable quantities.

You can buy 3.8mm black annealed in 25kg multiples here:

Take a very long time to do any quanity I think, a lot of surface area.

Electrolysis with the galv rod as the annode and a peice of steel sheet as cathode. The galv should strip off and plate onto the cathode. If you do enough peices you'll have a thick plating of zinc that you can reuse in the same process for plating. Plating is best done at low currents so dont try to mix stripping and plating at the same time.

If you get bright steel rod, you could anneal it with an induction heater? Make a bundle of 20 or so lengths and pass it though allowing it time to get red hot.

That's what I'm doing currently. Works okay but I need to get a different container so I don't have to cut it into shorter lengths first.

Just be nice to cut that step out completely.

Don't have the equipment for that although it would be very useful.
Sounds more work than just sticking it into the acid bath and leaving overnight.

That one is described as 'drawn', which implies BDMS, which he does not want.

Finding black (annealed for easier bending/shaping) steel in that diameter is difficult. Smaller is easy - rebar tying wire and rebar bundle wire - but 4mm seems to be a bit of a dead spot.

With the tubular acid bath, I think it would be necessary to agitate it occasionally. In a vertical orientation, something is going to sink to the bottom and something rise to the top (there are unlikley to be too many currents to mix the solution in such a small area), so the zinc dissolution might not be uniform. A length of plastic guttering with two end stops would allow horizontal use and allow you to stir it once in a while.

For info I'm using it for stuff like the wings on this, so it has to be pretty malleable, but stay put once shaped.

Dry cleaner's clothes hangers, they used to put a box out on the pavement every few weeks round here but I haven't seen any lately.
